Strategic Plan for “The Maxwell Mystery”
Research, Writing, Design, and Outreach Goals
Goal: Gather archive of materials surrounding Maxwell Shieff (printed and online) – STILL DOING THIS AS WAY TO ORGANIZE INFO WHICH CAN THEN BE TRANSFERRED TO TIMELINE– SHOULD I ALSO DO A STORYMAP (this was the plan and I think will work hand-in-hand with the timeline but might be unmanageable)
- Type-up notes from Spring Break meeting with Maxwell Shieff’s son Bill Shieff and his wife Sue
- Save images of advertisements and photos shared during SB meeting and organize them chronologically so they can be incorporated into the JS timeline
- Gather materials which I have already found and organize them chronologically to fit them into JS timeline
- Follow up with Bill Shieff about remaining materials which can be scanned and incorporated into website (specifically sketches and video artifact)
Goal: Used gathered archive of materials to create digital JS Timeline which tracks Shieff’s career
- Use visual data (images, video) to as “thumbnails” along timeline which users can click on and enlarge
- Attach these visual thumbnails to informational sections of written research which applies to the visual and gives users a more comprehensive idea of Shieff’s career
- Attach images/scans of relevant articles and advertisements to corresponding points along career timeline (look into possible copyright issues here)
- As adding data to timeline, cite all sources to compile into biography
Goal: Research on fashion history and women’s periodicals during the decades of Maxwell’s career (midcentury) CUT THIS OUT OR LIMIT THE SCOPE OF THE HISTORICAL RESEARCH
- Will be altering this plan by providing small pieces of historical background in a smaller scale interactive format or just in a few smaller pages featured on the website
- Use books and essays/articles gathered from library to research role of women’s publications in society in 1950’s and 60’s
- Gather quotes and cite all sources
- Incorporate these sources into small pieces of written content to be incorporated into website as its own page/section (not part of the timeline)
- Compare research to photographic and written evidence gathered from Bill Shieff’s MS archive
Goal: Write Journalism piece (styled after an investigative journalism narrative-style piece) on the entire Maxwell Mystery Story – I STILL PLAN ON DOING THIS SINCE I THINK IT IS CRUCIAL TO THE PROJECT AND ONE OF THE MOST INTERESTING WAYS TO CONVEY THE ENTIRE STORY OF SOLVING THIS “MYSTERY”
- The plan is still write this as I had originally imagined it (like an interactive and visually compelling scroll–down NYTimes-style narrative (see Mod’s online Koya Bound as example text)
- This narrative can take up the bulk of the site
- should it be parsed down into pieces and scattered throughout pages of the site to make it more managable and to make my site less-full (and more manageable for me to complete or would this be disruptive?)
- Part of the piece should document how I found the book my freshman year and how the research project evolved
- The piece should incorporate the story of finding the book with taking Digital Design currently
- The piece should equally detail Maxwell Shieff’s career (what I found out and surmised from my own research and my conversation with Bill Shieff—how the pieces came together, odd parallels, the supernatural element, open-ended ending, future possibilities)
Potential Goal: Use this project outcome/my own Maxwell Shieff research and expertise to write proposal to FIDM Museum, Los Angeles – I THINK THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT GOAL TO KEEP IN MIND MOVING FORWARD
- Complete website with the goal of using it as a digital proposal to help get Bill Shieff’s archives into the FIDM museum’s permanent collection, or make the website with the idea that it will help me establish my authority when I write proposal for the archives
- So end goal is helping to establish an archive at national museum
- I’ll admit this is ambitious but the end-goal of this project definitely changed after meeting and talking with Bill
- Now, a conversation has opened up and my project has gained greater purpose: to share a story and to help “resurrect” and establish the legitimacy of a historical figure
- Proposal written according to continued correspondence with Bill Shieff as a way to promote Maxwell Shieff’s importance as a historical figure central to LA area—with the goal of getting the MS archives entered into FIDM’s permeant collections
- If archives accepted, inquire about possibility of future temporary exhibition upon museum’s acceptance of archives (exhibition-design, content)
